Rahul Gandhi was also leading the party procession at the yatra, but midway, he opted to go to the hospital where the veteran Congress leader was taken, a party leader said. He will meet with Mr. Chaudhary’s family at his home in Jalandhar later.

The yatra has been suspended for now.

The Punjab leg of the Indian National Congress’ annual hiking event began on Wednesday in Fatehgarh Sahib. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge observed that the death of Rajya Sabha MP Chaudhary Charan Singh was “a great blow to the party and organization.”

Deeply saddened and shocked to learn about our MP Shri Santokh Singh Chaudhary’s untimely passing away, he is a great loss to the party and organization. In this hour of grief, I extend my most heartfelt sympathy to his family, friends, and colleagues. May his soul rest in peace.
